Walk in Murano

Trip by public ferry to Murano island

Murano is a group of small islands in the Venetian Lagoon, connected by bridges and known above all for glassmaking. People settled here very early, and over the centuries Murano became the main center of Venetian glass production. That history is still visible today in workshops, showrooms, small glass shops and the decorative objects displayed throughout the streets.

Even though Murano can be busy, it usually feels calmer than the main island of Venice. The canals are smaller, the walking routes are easier to read and the atmosphere is more focused on craft, water and local streets than on major monuments. For a short visit, that makes it a good contrast to Venice itself.

The easiest way to reach Murano is by public vaporetto. Several lines connect it with Venice and other lagoon stops, so the island works well as a half-day addition rather than a complicated separate trip. Once you arrive, the best approach is simple: walk along the canals, cross a few bridges, watch for glass displays and give yourself enough time to wander without a strict route.
